Black and white surround me
A vision in my mind
No chances for escaping
The prison that I find
Blocks of darkest ebony
And squares of purest white
Trap my soul inside themselves
As I wait for morning light
A large and open ballroom
With no windows, doors, or holes
Frantic, search for something
As the midnight bell still tolls
I freeze in just a moment
In the center of the room
As I notice with cold terror
The walls around me loom
But the space is growing smaller
The room is closing in
There's no escaping now, I see
My future's looking dim
Closer, closer, closer
The checkerboard draws near
I'm frozen in my anguish
And drowing in my fear
Closer, closer, closer
The light is fading now
My breathing growing heavier
Sweat glist'ning on my brow
Then at last I cannot see
The white has vanished, gone
Black is all around me
And it's still so long till dawn
Then suddenly, it's over
And light has blinded me
My vision slowly clearing
Until a new sight frightens me
Black and white surround me
A vision in my mind
Once again, I see it there
This prison that I find
Blocks of darkest ebony
And squares of purest white
Trap my soul inside themselves
As I wait for morning light
A vision in my mind
No chances for escaping
The prison that I find
Blocks of darkest ebony
And squares of purest white
Trap my soul inside themselves
As I wait for morning light
A large and open ballroom
With no windows, doors, or holes
Frantic, search for something
As the midnight bell still tolls

As I notice with cold terror

And drowing in my fear
Closer, closer, closer
The light is fading now

Author notes
This was a dream I had often as a child. The room was entirely made of black and white tiles, including the walls and ceiling; there were never any doors or windows. In time, the room would start closing in on me until all that was around me was black. I would either wake up at just the last minute, or it would simply restart.

Ahhh, it's about time I found a poem here that actually has decent metering and rhyme. It seems both are quite hard to find these days.
That seems like quite an odd dream; had you not explained it in the author notes, I probably wouldn't have known what the hell you were talking about. Thank you for the clarification.
This wasn't bad; not bad at all. -
