On Native Ground

The Declaration of Independence
Signed and sealed on this certain day
Seventeen hundred and seventy six
July the 4th, molded from bloody soil

They fought many battles and won them all
Yankee Doodle Dandies all in their rows
Philadelphia, policing the scene
To make politicians richer then before

Each July in every city and town
Fireworks boom, to light up the moon
Invaders celebrate, for what its worth
Forgetting how many, had to die

America the beautiful, home of the "Indian" brave
Slavery, slaughters, and treaty’s cleft tongues
Celebrating a lairs party, on stolen land
All the while, Indians screaming NO

Freedom rings, for whom?

Red – Red man, Native Americans
White – White man, invaders
Blue – The color our lips turned as we
choked on lies and then died of starvation

They came from many places,
each clan having similar ways
Most white, some black, some yellow,
some in-between colors

Sailing ships with grains and cattle,
guns, cannons and spears
Building homes and towns,
then big cities, calling America home

We spoke; you cannot claim this land
that the great one gave to us
How can you claim the wind, waters,
deserts or mountains where we live?

Then we got our answers,
broken treaties, slaughtered tribes
We were set for destruction,
amalgamation or extinction

Some survived, we are still here,
Indian Nations, waiting
Enjoy freedom born of deceitful colors;
pretend the government is a friend

While the rocket’s red glare,
gives illusions of residence
Digging deeper in empty pockets
Uncle Sam is waving his bloody flag

    Wow

This was powerful, and so true. It's weird that Native American contributions toward this country is not recognized! It's crazy what the tribes have to go through.

It makes me sad to know how the Native Americans were torn from their part of this country and forced to live, not in freedom, but according to government decree.

You've related a part of our history which perhaps many have never known before, at least not within the compassionate, powerful way you've spoken of in this superbly written poem, Cindy.

It's truly a wonderful write with a powerful message.
Thank you for entering it in the contest

You captured these feelings so well, with all the Glory in sight one could easily forget what was the sacrefice of all....Freedom for whom?

    Enjoy freedom born of deceitful colors;
pretend the government is a friend

I think there are more nations with a history much a like...
But it's never to late to say Sorry...and to make things right..and never make the same mistakes again...but I guess that will just happen in dreams of the common people.

Great write, good luck in this contest,

your poem made me so sad ...
I can feel how you feel ...
even if I'm not born native american ...
I can understand that you're not in a mood for celebration, how could you be ?
your grandmother being "bought" from the government by your grandfather ...

    so much suffering ...
    too much ...

Every word is truth, the land we call our nation was taken from another.

You tell it like it is sis, this is a beautiful piece and pulls at your heart. So much truth in your words. Celebrations based on centuries of suffering, doesn't seem like much of a celebration to me. Kudos on this one hun Hugs, Bunny
