From the picture postcard stalls
in the piazza,
tourists buy his photograph
for a few euro.
In the Galleria, nearby,
in white marble perfection,
he stands with living admirers
clustered round his feet;
his large right hand
enclosing the missile
with which he will slay
the Philistine.
Naked and alone he waits
poised and ready,
every vein and muscle showing
his youthful virility.
Author notes
The statue of David was sculpted by Michelangelo between 1501 and 1504, and originally stood in front of the Palazzo Signoria in Florence, until replaced by a copy, it was taken into the adjacent Accadamia Gallery to protect it from inclement weather.

Amazing!
Now this is what I was talking about. Beautiful piece written about a very special work of art. I love the way you made the statue come to life. This poem was so vivid, I could see what you were describing in my mind and it really put me there, beside it. I love your use of descriptive words. Very beautiful write. Impressive, to say the least.
Thank you so much for entering, and for giving the background history in your author's notes.
