I gave her a gold coin
and a rose
And sent her on her way.
Her love remains
Only her body is gone
to romp the hills
Of Heaven's rolling plains.
Her love stays here
Leaning against my legs
I feel her there
And live my life with cheer.
Yes, Sandy left today
But left us much to cherish
a life of love
And spirit to help us on our way.
Author notes
My faithful companion Sandy left our family the other day. She died of old age [15] in her sleep. Her suffering is over now, and ours is just beginning. Goodbye Sandy.

I am well acquainted with the bitter pain of losing such a faithful friend, the bond between human and dog can be so terribly strong. But, oh, what a beautiful tribute to your Sandy you have written here. I am deeply touched.
Sincerely,

It is hard to lose a pet that's like a family member. Now you have all your beautiful memories to enjoy. You can be with Sandy anytime you choose. Lovely poem.

Very warm and sweet. I've lost two dogs already in my life and it's always just as hard. I'm glad you have such fond memories and thoughts to help you.

Good you've released
I think Brazos tis just a chance
To encounter a new romance
Romance being an acquaintance
With unencountered circumstance
Perhaps with someone's pet that's new
Or just a feeling in the dew
Of early morning when you see
Memories of the past that be
Displayed in imagination
Recalled is infatuation
You have for one that you do love
That one occupies space above
Some others that\who you have known
With memories our love is sewn.

I am sorry for the loss of your faithful and loving companion. Pets can be so empathic, and they love us no matter what. It is amazing how they comfort us so nicely, and make us laugh when we need that too. All that, and they don't even speak our language! This is a beautiful poem about Sandy, and the picture of her is wonderful. Blessings to you, Patty

Beautiful poem
Wow, what a touching tribute to Sandy. I miss Toby the same way -- he was a Queensland Heeler, a mix of red and blue. He would come butt his head up against my leg to get my attention or just to say hello.
This is a good write and left me choked up.

I was lead to your poetry by comments you have left on others' writes. I sure chose a good one to read. In between the lines, I feel your pathos. Having owned many dogs, their unconditional love and intelligence, makes them a part of the family. So hard it is to say good bye to any family member. I always say after I lose a dog, "Never again!" but I always end up getting a puppy, as I so miss the sweet eyes they each have and the love they bring to an empty nester. My Scotty Stella is now 8. Most live only unitl 12, at the oldest. I dread the day.......
Beautiful memorial poem for Sandy!

I loved this so much ...
for we, too, have a little fox-terrier waiting "to romp the hills" ... And every day may be the last day her soft whining may be heard ...
I posted a comment on friendship on another poem a few minutes ago; your beautiful poem made me realize that the love of our pets is perhaps one of the very best manifestations of loyalty one may get.
Many happy memories to you, Brazos, of the love and companionship Sandy brought into your lives.
Thank you for being my friend.
Love
Myra

Beautiful tribute to Sandy
How sad sweetness and heartfelt. I can relate to your write my little dog died about three months ago. She was a Deer Chihuahua, and was about 13years old. I miss her too much. They become part of your life, like a child. I was thinking of getting a new puppy but I think I will wait. For I might leave in august.

Heartfelt!
I refered a friend here today and was so impressed by your third verse I thought I should let you know.
"Her love stays here
Leaning against my legs"
That is "exactly" how it is. To feel their presence in a physical sense even though they are no longer physically there. I am sorry for the loss of your faithful companion. Jadon
