Big on the Little Things

Since
The poor are always with us
And street crime is not going to stop;
Given that
Education reform is too difficult
And the health service keeps getting worse;
In view of the fact that
Immigration policy is unenforceable
And whereas
Global warming is an impossible problem
And, in any case, not the sole responsibility of this government,
It has been determined
That the resources of the state be directed to
i) The apprehension of speeding motorists
ii) Extended public enquiries
iii) Installation of surveillance equipment
iv) Promoting the powers to search private premises
v) Extension of detention without charge

vi) Tax audits for small businesses
vii) The elimination of smoking on railway platforms
viii) Moving the deck chairs

Author notes

From July 1st, the UK will no longer permit smoking in enclosed public places, including railway platforms. As a non-smoker I find this interesting.

My friend who smokes tells me that the cost of smoking related diseases to the National Health Service is two million pounds where the revenue from taxes on tobacco is ten million.

Surely the rational thing to do is to encourage smoking, both as a way of funding public works and of eliminating smokers from the gene pool...

Would a more cynical man than me be tempted to believe this sort of thing?

    haha...yeah...why take care of the big things when it's so easy to make the little ones big and therefor be able to act like you've actualy done some good? I'd say that the goverments of the world need to rethink that...but will they?

    Is that my verdict doesn't make much sense

    As a smoker, your lucky that I didn't just smoke this poem off. Well, you know that was my choice to read the author comments. I had too, it was a very 'interesting' piece. Um, yes so the government sucks everywhere, and everyone agrees yes? is that really how you spell revenue in Britain...cool. I am so using that word. a lot. Back to sentences. Oh I just got that last comment about the gene pool, because smoking is lethal. Ok screw everything I have said prior to the word screw, and a good prose with lines and numbers.

      Sorry. Revenue with no e is a typo, I'm afraid. And it does seem weird to be persecuting smokers when there is so much really wrong with the world.
