I met you with suspicion, hesitation
Like I did with everything around me
But you were persistent, relentless
Knowing that you were supposed
To be in my life
And the vacant space in my heart
Was where you belonged
You gave me constant kindness and friendship
When I least expected it
And needed it the most
Eventually I could no longer deny
Your quiet beauty, your white radiance
When I first spoke the words, "I love you"
With such determination, such confidence
You just calmly smiled, as if
You had possessed this knowledge all along
Then you responded that I, too, had your love
And our nervous lips touched and slowly parted
Into a kiss as sweet and pure
As childhood dreams or a starlit night
Soon you revealed the dark secret
That crept under your skin
The one with the ugly name of "leukemia"
When I heard this, I reacted in anger
Because of my fear of losing you
But I could never abandon you
And you showed me your acceptance of your fate
Giving me strength of my own
The sickness began to spread
And the light inside of you dimmed
With trembling hands I prayed by your bedside
To release you from your pain
To have you stay with me for always
You assured me it was meant to be like this
Comforting me with your unwavering love
Up until your final moment of surrender
God needed you back
So you have returned to your home in heaven
Where you can fly without the constraints of disease
And can dance among the clouds
I remain on earth, looking up at the sky
Forever thinking of you
Grateful of the precious time I had
With my borrowed angel
Author notes
I tweaked the title "borrowing angels" a bit as you can see
This poem is inspired by the book/film A Walk To Remember, my apologies if you don't think of it too fondly

This is a wonderful poem, and thanks for your entry, but I will have to disqualify you because it's a love poem. Feel free to enter any of your other poems though! (Just not about love

Fifth line in the third stanza...That is spelled wrong. I won't dock for it, I do it all the time, trust me.
I love A Walk to Remember, and honestly, it was the first thing I thought of as I read it through. Beautiful book, beautiful movie.
Here are the original lyrics if you don't already know them

Beautifully sad and it touches me.Liked the way you told the story in guise of poem.
