Mourning Dove grey as day
Injured dreams lay,
Under shiny fallen feathers
Tears of shimmering rainbow grace her cheeks
Fleeting the moment behind dark eyes
Gentle mourning dove
slowly dies.
In my hands cupped and wild
Passionate soaring misplaced
Flight gives way to fate
Fluttering helpless beak sealed
Canker’s contagious, crusty memories and rusty dreams
Her mouth will no longer sing
The song many children bring
stumbling weakness
Twisted neck, gasping hopes
Temperate spirit siezed and spread her wings
one last time.
Two worlds collided mourning dove and mine.
I wrap her in plastic and throw her away
Mourning my ambitions
this grey day.
Author notes
I found a dove, it had the deadly disease canker, grows on their mouth eventually killing them. This is the same time I was faced with a dissapointing reality of my own unrequitted dreams and hopes.

This is absolutely breathtaking, and the emotional infusion within the lines is undeniable. I was taken aback by the pronounced imagery. You have done an admirable job of bringing out so much meaning with the words you have carefully chosen here. Keep that pen handy and let the ink continue to flow dear poet!
