A "form" of praise

fallen away days
earth stricken with violence
Satan's busy rein
comes to dance in wickedness
gnaw the masses in greed

do not bewilder
every creature will bow down
not to be dismayed
when time passes, is no more
foundation near to ashes

be prayerful always
blest miracle is at hand
the good of a thing
it is not complicated
spirit of the lord is here

if we but seek him
the light in pupils still shines
hold fast to your faith
there's a greater ease in life
as learning to love abounds

let this new-found work
be anxious for nothing you wish
yours before you asked
it is pleasing with the Lord
when we lift up Holy praise

Author notes

What is Choka?

Choka* is a form of Japanese long poetry pre-dating, but related to, haiku. You can think of it as haiku’s super-fun great-great-grandfather. As with haiku, the lines of a choka should not rhyme but should follow a syllabic pattern (onji), namely 5-7-5, 7-5, 7-5, 7-5 ... 7-7.

MY CHOKA is...5-7-6-7-7 throughout the poem
