Fever

A crystalline sky allows the true beauty of the rocky spires to shine through. Skies so blue one compares it to the birth of a new born boy. Clouds so wispy one expects to hear the echo of an old mans cough to descend from the heavens. So majestic the scene, you whip out a camera expecting to capture the revolving essence in a hundredth of a second.

Then ice falls from the sky covering everything in shiny platinum. Screeching tires and the far off desperation of dying cars fill the air. You turn around to answer a faint call that resonates from nowhere; upon turning back a fog has mysteriously covered everything. Your view is cut down from tens of miles to hundreds of yards.

I awake.

Is it my future that’s eluding my grasp? Why can’t I step up? What’s holding me back?

“Take control.” the raspy voice says, “Stop being afraid!”

“I’M NOT!” I cry.

The gods conspire against me. They taunt me. They push me. Fuck the electrons firing inside the tube of passivity.

Why does the ox carry the burden and not the reward?

Have I become so self absorbed that I can not do more then think I deserve something instead of taking it?

Questions beget more questions. I want resolution.

Beginning a new life from the comforting womb of another is a lot harder then I expected. I must succeed. I can not fail. I will not fail.

I awake.

The curving rays of the eastern sunrise have penetrated my bedroom. My bedroom is warm again. The air has the tingle of ozone. My synapses explode across my frontal lobe alerting me to a fire, yet everything is fine. I am fine.

I wipe the pasty crust from my eyelashes. I am alive. I will do my best today. Tomorrow is an illusion. Today is all that matters.

I am awake.
