walking down Sherman avenue in uptown Coeur D'Alene
is perfectly wonderful with the new smells of summer simplicity
i can't help but notice old looks given away for free by the locals
but i keep a special look from one special person right here
in my front shirt pocket tucked underneath a dollar bill
and she is there close to my heart even though -even so
i like to think of the wrinkles in my dollar (pretending)
it isn't quite as old as i was young a long time ago
it isn't quite as soft and fragile as i use to be but an hour ago
crying a good weep is better than a swells drop of fanciful foot work
how much i wonder -would i get payed to cry at a funeral
two shiny silver dollars one for each eye and i'm good to go
one stick of gum stuck to my shoe and i'll pick up anything
along the way to divinity and government way
the music is on every street corner and the wine is ever-flowing
i'm strolling faster than i can comprehend and it's beautiful to see
i'm not alone with so many strangers encompassing my line of sight
i'm more at ease drinking in the sounds of fervent happy jubilation
a picture of you is my thousand words tucked close to my heart
near to this dollar bill that i found when i tripped over your feet
your laces were frayed on purpose and i remember vividly
the smell of fresh cut grass and honeysuckle breezing by my nose
i can see from the corner of my eye the wine cellar restaurant
where we drank pear cider spirits and kissed like parakeets
it seemed forever in a moment but flickered away a candle flame
that burned so bright that night and i was blinded by your blue heaven
the faces here are new to me even though i recognize a few familiar stares
and the Coeur D'Alene is closest to my heart with you in this dollar bill
Author notes
Coeur D'Alene is probably one of the most beautiful cities I have ever been to and live in now. I cherish the memories and good times this place has given me.
