A Police Officer's Reality

I try to help a dying child,
then go home to my own.
I look at my two children,
grateful there at home.
I tried my best to save him,
but my best was not enough.
As I lay down at night I wonder,
why some days are so tough.
I help a hopeless victim,
that's struggling to survive.
Then she calls me when she heals,
and Thanks me for her life.
This job is never easy,
as we take the good with the bad.
Our lives revolve around death,
and the life that they have had.
For every life I save, there's no feeling more great,
there's a lot of small things I've learned to appreciate.
I face my next morning ready to tackle the day,
Learning how to survive a police officer's way.

I can't imagine how difficult it would be to be surrounded by death, the dying and the hopeless constantly. I also can't imagine how incredible it feels to save someone's life and bring hope into someone's reality. You've have given a window into your world with this piece. Thank you for sharing.

I totally understand where this is coming from, being an ex police officer myself. It's not an easy life to deal with, though I had no family of my own at that time and it was far easier to 'detatch' myself from such heart wrenching situations. Though, looking back, I can totally relate as my life is now touched by being a mum of three.
You put it over well..... I wish you good luck in the contest.
