Changing Skirts

Today she wears overalls,
Yesterday she wore a mini.
Tomorrow she'll put on
Shiny leather pants.
That girl, they say,
Where did she get her dress?

Today she's all smiles,
Yesterday she danced all morning.
Tomorrow she'll sigh,
her eyes shaded dark
Do the clothes make the girl,
Or does the girl make the clothes?

Today she's a hippy,
Yesterday she went totally goth.
Tomorrow, it's a mystery
Just who this girl will be...
It's easy to lose your identity
When you're always changing skirts.

***3. The Struggles in being Unique***

I guess you could say this is sort of autobiographical...

I really liked this, and it rings very true, on a number of levels.

Society will always judge youth by fashion, and finds itself shocked to see a spiky-haired multi-pierced teenager help an old lady cross the street!

Also each of us, when we pull on a set of clothes, dons a persona associated with them. Put on gladrags and you feel the need to be out there, mixing in society; sloppy joes tend to lead to duvet days.

There is also here the story of a girl growing up, growing into her clothes, trying both the clothes and personalities on until she will eventually find who she really is.

The question at the end of stanza 2 is well-asked, and the final two lines of the poem sum up a fine social statement.

Loved the theme and the flow, really great poem!

Best of luck in the contest,
