Chemo Can't Hold You Down

I've started this poem with so many lines
but for some reason, words just can't define
how much I love you; how much I care
how much what happened just wasn't fair

I wish I could tell you how this makes me feel
when you told me that night, it didn't seem real
the light from the bonfire illuminated your face
reminding me of the time you'd been in "The Amazing Race"

You were to tell a story of a weakness you had
I hadn't a clue it would be so truly sad
when you told about your cancer, I could hardly believe
I just wanted to wake up- to learn it was all a dream

You told just how devestating this news had been
how your dreams had been crushed, lost, broken, but then-
your faith in God helped you ting your way
and continue in life with optimism- all through the day

Though you learned it was a blessing, I must confess
I was still scared, that you could guess
after campfire you showed up with us in cabin 5
my heart skipped a beat, I felt, well, alive

You answered our questions the best that you could
you answered them truthfully, I knew that you would
the desease that you had wasn't all that bad
but having hodgkins lymphoma sure was sad

You were gonna go to Africa, but your energy was down
but somehow you managed to never, ever wear a frown
you used to be in track, the 4x1 relay
but your effervescent personality, the chemo can't delay

I'll never forget your bright blue eyes, staring up at mine
you assured me that you'd be okay, that God was on your side
you treatment's done November, that keeps me up all night
but I will keep on praying, and soon you'll be allright

You are so amazing- your faith in god is strong
you're stunning, bubbly, fun and sweet, you know the right from wrong
you're energetic, silly, and you know just what to say
and nothing, not even chemo, can take those traits away!

Author notes

This is beautiful!!!! It makes me so sad. Carly is so cool!!! I knew someone who had brain cancer and passed away. He made his time on Earth so useful and I'm sure Carly will, too. hugs!!!!

That was strong. I've known many with cancer, and you just can't let it get you down.
