The windless season

Oh the rising hour of the sleepless soul
where my hungering heart does so long,
until the windless season makes it whole.

The cycle of birth and life: as springtime foal
among verdancy and blooms, standing strong;
oh the rising hour of the sleepless soul.

So the seasons of like, portend and roll
like the waves that shifting seas prolong
until the windless season makes it whole.

We live in shade and shadow of an ageless toll
where even the gentle sparrow does monstrous wrong
Oh the rising hour of the sleepless soul.

Stripling trees spared  ravenous worm and bole,
we do to the world as the hungry birds, yearlong
until the windless season makes it whole.

With the mirth and joy from heaven we stole
as the life within lifts like a Sparrow song;
Oh the rising hour of the sleepless soul,
until the windless season makes it whole.

Author notes

A Villanelle is a nineteen-line poem consisting of a very specific rhyming scheme:
aba aba aba aba aba abaa.

The first and the third lines in the first stanza are repeated in alternating order throughout the poem, and appear together in the last couplet (last two lines).

Description of writing:

Free verse primarily, metaphoric and expressive styles; rhyming/lyrical poetry too. Current direction, i am trying to develop some small skill in form poetry, this is my second Villanelle.

    Villanelle is one of my favourite form of poetry, I enjoy reading and writing this form.
    You did very well here. The refrains worked well in every stanza, and made a perfect pair in the last one.
    Another enjoyable read on your page

    Great use of the form

    This is a well crafted vilanelle, and you've managed to shape the imagery within it so that there is none of the forced 'clunky' phrasing which can come with formic poetry.

    Great write- good luck in the contest.
