They came for us in fiery flames
with words of incense we did not understand,
this disease of their rage evoked mortal fear
these sisters and I huddled tightly, concealed.
'Twas full moon when they stormed our home
screaming they would find the 'witches' and burn
every ounce of evil that lurked within
knowing they were searching for us, yet not why.
To fight was unthinkable, flight we took
knowing we could not hide forever,
as I escaped my sisters hauled
to the place where the wicked were exterminated.
From a young age we had special abilities
to heal and assist the injured and ill,
yet women seen as giving birth their only purpose
any other gifts viewed with depravity.
I watched in horror as these maidens were hung
their screams, then nothing as their lifeforce ceased,
knowing a noose was there ready for me
I froze in cowardice, my will to live.
As I look in these flames I see a cowards face
knowing I cannot stay as tears flow in anguish,
oh my sisters, my sisters I will join you soon
this holocaust of persecution I can no longer bear.

Such a sad story told. I like this one a lot, it shows well the anguish of witches that were taken as evil. I just love the way you took this story and the picture, making it a story worth the words it has gotten. I like this piece a lot!

Amazing. Sad and shocking. Beautiful, extremely filled with emotion, yet calm is such a melancholy way. Good luck in my contest, and thank you so much for entering.

Powerful
My first impression when I saw the picture was.."Oh Lord", to be honest! This is a well crafted poem based on a picture almost to horrible to bear. You did a great job with this and I wish you well in the contest! Carolyn

Excellent
What a wonderful poem, based on the picture. So full of the feeling that does happen when we watch without getting involved. Best of luck in the contest.
