A Letter To a Friend

Visions of the past
Smile on me tonight
My friend I feel your presence
Your strength and will to fight

I see that strong young face
The uniform so fine
And this tall Marine...
Alive and in his prime

It's many years my friend,
I've not forgotten you
The times we spent together
The talk of girls and many brews

I remember when you left
You said your last goodbye
And letters from the jungle
Shed their fear, without a lie

My uniform was different
My fate was to remain
And you went off to heaven
So great was then God's gain

Tonight ,I sit here thinking

A tear drop fills my eye

You died before that twenty

But your star now lights the sky

    Bob

Finally got here after searching through about 16 pages.Phew!
    I like this one, Bob.

My Mom was mother to four veterans and often said, "None of us can understand what it was they went through." I don't try, it would be futile.

A kid from my neighborhood didn't get home, Tito. I think he wore elevated shoes to pass the height deal. But he had the cojones!

And Ritchie Lazerick lost most of his left leg to a VC grenade. He said his Sargent,
named Morales, a Mexican guy, carried him about three miles to be airlifted out.
Every time I hear an imbecile say, "Why don't these wet-backs go back to their own country" or something to that effect, I want to whip the dog-shit out of them.

Good homage to a friend. Shakes and shudders.

    John

The heart of a true friend penned such a beautiful dedication to a friend who has forever held his memory pure and with so much respect and emotion. I really loved this for it spoke so openly about your friend. It was a beautiful verse that read....

    My uniform was different
    My fate was to remain
And you went off to heaven
So great was then God's gain

That was the most feeling couple of lines that really touched my soul and made me not only smile but sigh. God did indeed gain much, even though the pain that was left behind was terrible. Excellent rhyme, rhythm and flow. God bless Ed Furlong and all past, present and future who give so much of themselves for others. Thank you so much for entering and the very best in the contest.

  • Had to read again

While just viewing the different contests on this site, I came across your poem again, and I can honestly say that it touched me the same way it did the first time I read it. A very beautiful, heartfelt poem that I am quite sure has touched many, many others as well. You did and excellent job with this wonderfully written expression, and I just wanted to share this with you, again. Great Job.

This is beautiful and sad, yet comforting. Memories are gold and our friends are Platinum. You honor him greatly with your memory and composition. And to see a star and remember him is even more honorable. Oftentimes when people pass away we are so self absorbed that we forget that person, who they are, how they affected our lives, and how we loved them. Its great to hear a memory, especially when written so artistically. Thank you

  • oh what a lovely dedication to your friend, those memories I would think are treasured by you, one can never forget that star that lights the sky...

  • Ed Furlong.. heard that name recently, though I cannot quite remember where.
Generally I dislike rhyming poetry because I feel like it confines the writer, but you can rhyme outside of the damned box so I've made an exception. : ) You use better words. It makes a difference. ; )

The power of this poem is in the restraint words that are understatements reflecting the opposite of what they seem to express. War is mankind's ultimate crime; so many talents and good souls are erased from life by it - the ritual human sacrifice of the elite. Thank you for creating and sharing. Take care.

  • Beautifully Expressed!

I am sorry for the pain that gives you the inspiration to write this. Just reading this makes me mourn all of those who have passed on before. This is a really wonderful write.

    Great read

  • Oh, wow... this melted my heart... beautiful.. everything was perfect in thes... the flow, rhythm and the rhyming... everything, well done.

  • This causes many emotions as I read it.
    Anger, Sadness, Empathy...

My dear friend Doug (I called him Dougy but I know he only tolerated it lol) was a casualty of that "policing" over in Veitnam.
He made it home with a broken back which healed but the emotional and mental wounds never did.
Finally he died due to an over dose/aneurysm/car accident that was a direct result of that damned war.

This poem is a beautiful honor to your friend and I know of many who would find it just as touching.

    Kind Of Sad Bob

To lose a friend in such a way - probably in some war that never should have been - so many of you fine young men and women (pawns) gave their lives in vain - sooooooo sad Bob - and the way we sugarcoat the whole mess - makes me cry too - your are great writer Bob - I like your style - my uncle died in Zagreb at the hands of the Croat Nazis - there is street there named after him - after Croatia broke away from Jugoslavia - many wanted the street re-named because he was a Communist - but the city fathers said no - it's a part of history - leave it - Bless God Bob - Joe

Your words are appreciated. But we must come to realize that one murderous tyrant is no better then another. Wars have been & always will be fought. The hope is that the just wins them. Tyrants like Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot & Mussolini are certainly above the norm in todays spector. Lets hope we see no more of those.

I really love the way you've characterized the Marine: Young and innocent, but courageous and ready to defend. This was such a sad poem, but what really breaks my heart, is that it's all true. There can be no better poem, than a poem written out of reality. This is without a doubt one of the best poems I've read since I joined AP. A real "tear-jerker". KEEP WRITING!!!

How lucky we are to be able to pen such beauty in words and create such a heartfelt dedication, when that is all that is left for us to be able to give.

    wow...

I spent 5 years in the Army, but never knew anyone personally that was KIA. This is a deeply personal, emotional write and I am deeply moved. Well done.

  • This is very moving, I love it.

my dear friend this brought tears to my heart and eyes as i could feel the close bond you both held as well as the heartfelt compassion that exudes from your spirit when you spoke of your friend whom you had lost at such a young age and makes it all the more reason to read during memorial weekend. thank you!! You both are an honor for having served for all humanity. I have a high school classmate whom passed a several yrs ago from Cancer leaving behind a wife and 2 small children - he was a patrolman of the Iowa Highway patrol. many blessings always thank you again for sharing you with me. xxx

As we grow we know we shall see family & friends pass on. In my years I have seen many. Especially when I was young. But even now, for last year I lost 3 friends, it never is easy. we can only honor them. You are very kind . I ty again

hun loss is never easy whether its someone very close or even a semi close aquaintance - in 1978 i lost my Dad right b4 my 15th bday. in 2003 in 2 weeks time I lost my sons biological father, my mother and my mother in law.then 6 weeks later an uncle. its never easy but in time the pain lessens and the memories continue to grow.

Wonderful tribute to Ed, your dear friend. War is an awful thing and it has claimed so many of the world's soldiers. And your loving poem states of cherished memories and those are priceless, Bob.

We are blessed to have memories of our loved ones. Ed is blessed in your remembrance of them.

    Just beautiful!
    Kelly

Bob, I am truly sorry for the loss of your friend. That war, and many others, claimed so many wonderful lives, and the Heavens are the better for it while we cry for them. Know that he is where he belongs, drink a toast to his loving memory and know he would be proud of these beautiful words. Patricia
