Cold Eyes

A beautiful baby,
With warm, brown eyes-
Taken from his mother,
Chosen to die.

What could he do?
He couldn’t talk to say “No!
What about my life?
I’ll never get the chance to grow!”

But the men,
They don’t care-
Don’t want to acknowledge
The baby’s hurt and despair.

They drag him along,
Load him up in a truck-
He thinks “It’s over.
I’m all out of luck.”

Cows unload, and stampede-
Some trampled into the ground.
The young cow looks around-
But there’s no mercy to be found.

He watches his brothers and sisters
Get crushed.
But no one can stop,
They’re all being rushed.

Those that get trampled
Don’t completely die
They can’t get back up,
They do nothing but cry.

His brown eyes darted wildly,
But he knew-
There was nothing
One little brown cow could do.

The cows are brought into a room
And tied to a conveyor
The cow closes his eyes
And thinks one last prayer.

The line moves so fast,
He hardly knows what’s happening-
They lift something to his forehead,
He thinks “What is that thing?”

It takes less than a second
For him to find out-
It’s a knocking-gun,
Designed to knock him out.

But wait!
It doesn’t work!
This cow is still alive,
The line starts moving with a jerk.

“Wait! Why don’t you stop?
What on Earth are you thinking?!?
Can you not see I’m alive,
That my eyes are still blinking?”

In only a minute,
The baby cow’s throat is slit.
His skin is ripped off,
And he’s thrust into a boiling-water pit.

Even then, he’s still alive-
He doesn’t want to go yet.
He looks up at a worker,
And their eyes are met.

Watery, soft, brown eyes,
Open just a crack,
Look up for flash of mercy-
Cold eyes stare back.

Author notes

About a young cow who gets sent to a meat factory. You can probably guess what happens next... Inspired by the column written by kareneisenlord (http://allpoetry.com/poem/2792806) I suggest you read it! Sad, but true. And yes, I am a vegetarian.

Oh. This is a very sad story poem that you have going on in here. I have heard a lot of these kinds of stories about slaughter houses and that. It's hard to listen to because I feel bad about just about everything. I believe in the circle of life but it's still a sad thing when it comes to death. I don't know what the answer is anymore. But I think you did a good job of expressing yourself here.

OMG. This is so sad. I'll admit I was wondering to start with about it and then it was revealed that it is about a calf. This is truly a sad tail indeed. Thank you for sharing.

It's less about the flow and format, more about the story behind it.

Oh. This is such a sad poem you have written here. I read another poem a week ago that was about the same kind of thing and I thought that was sad too. It's hard to deal with things like that when there's not a whole lot you can do about it. I thought you did a good job in telling one little baby calf's tale of sorrow.

Actually, there is a LOT that can be done to help this common problem. If we all had that kind of attitude, nothing would ever change! Try to think positive xP Read Kareneisenlord's column Brutality
