For My Dad

I've heard it said a child's belief

In God is based upon

The kind of man his father is;

Conclusions that are drawn

If that is true, it would, indeed,

Explain so many things

And why, for some, mistrust and fear

Are ropes to which they cling

But as for me, I stand as one

Whom Providence has blessed

For to God's Wisdom, Love and Grace

I fully can attest

For by an act of Goodness

I have yet to comprehend,

The one God chose to guide my life

Became my dearest friend

This man, not given much to words...

Uncomfortable with talk

Was no doubt unaware of eyes

That focused on his 'walk'

A man who never asked for praise

For doing what was right

From day to day 'showed up'

And gave his all, with all his might

He willingly released his own ambitions,

Dreams and goals

So that, in time to come,

We'd find our own respective roles

And all the things imbued in him...

Steadfastness, truth, and more,

Are attributes possessed by God,

And on my Dad, were poured

But one thing stands above all else;

One thing I know that's true

His brand of love, though sometimes tough,

Is what has seen me through

And though it's true

I haven't always lived out what was taught,

He set the guideposts for my life

Those principles...I caught

Is God Love?  Does He exist?

And can there proof be had?

I have to look no further

Than the man who is my Dad

I love this poem. Being a dad and a grand dad, I would be over the moon if I thought my children thought of me in this way. What an amazing and wonderful tribute to your Dad. I hope you showed it to him.

In the immortal words of Shapeskeare...

    ...Whoaeth!

This is an absolutely amazing (and exceptional) tribute to your Dad. I was honored and privileged to be able to read it. I'm sure you know he was most likely far from unaware (line 26), which if anything would tend to make the walk more difficult. Bravo to your Dad, and Bravissimo to you! God Bless Your Love, Forever.

    Sincerely,
    Marvin J. †
