Death to Chickens

"Death to chickens" comes the shout.
Incessant motion all about.
Mobed they are, without defense,
So helpless too, with little sense.
Now cornered with excessive force,
They're headed soon for chicken sauce.
But in the back they find a hatch,
And scratching madly at the latch,
Open! one, two, three they go,
While ducking arrows to and fro.
Down the tube and speeding fast,
Out the other end they blast,
Hot of bum and red of cheek,
Across the empty yard they streak.
In the sky they set their sights,
And in the air they start their flights.
Beyond the fence and from the hutch.
To thinning, falling straws they clutch.
And freedom comes as freedom does,
To those of chicken ilk because
That chicken sauce is not for me,
I like my chickens running free.

Good use of rhyme and excellent comedic and ethical content. Very entertaining. The only thing I could point out critically would be your un-capitalized 'i'. I don't think that this retracts from the poem too much, but I can't help wondering if it is a typo.

    Wonderful... ^^

I adore this..! Twistedly amusing... Heres a few of my favorite lines. ^^
"Down the tube and speeding fast,
Out the other end they blast,
Hot of bum and red of cheek,
Across the empty yard they streak."
But I also adore the ending lines.

"That chicken sauce is not for me,
I like my chickens running free."

    Haha, I have to agree. ^^ =]

Well written, and its the first poem I've found lately that I love the flow to. ^^ *applauds* Great job..!

Ah, this is great and really quite nice just because it's so different. I like the light-hearted feel of the narrator and for the most part everything sounds good. In a few areas where your sentence structure is reversed for rhyme scheme you may want to go over what you have you written because it sounds a little stilted, but generally still okay. Anyhow, great poem. Thank you for sharing.

Haha! This was great. There's too many sad and depressing poems on this site- we need more humor ones like yours.

There were a few things I spotted:

Lines five and six don't quite rhyme. Is there anyway to redo it?
And then lines seventeen and eighteen are very close. Perhaps "flights" at the end of eighteen?

Otherwise, a very good poem. Thanks for a fun read!

This was such a fun read...And as to the question in your Author's Comments, only chickens at the grocery store, One Angry Monkey! In truth, when my daughter was little I bought her two little baby chicks for Easter. The first few nights were sleepless for me--Who knew baby chicks peeped all night? They grew up to be a nasty hen who pecked at the cats and me whenever to clean their cage, and though the rooster was a sweet bird, he would cock-a-doodle-doo anytime after 2:00 PM--Not much in the way of a early-riser I guess.

So, I guess I have seen my share of "free chickens," though not at the grocery store.

    Jo

P.S.: By changing all references of "chicken" to "turkey" in this poem, you'll have a great poem for Thanksgiving too!

    Brilliant!

The plight of chickens, and what they must go through. These have to be the most clever chickens of all time, though hot of bum and red of cheek, they still pulled off their escape. Thanks for this delightful read, I needed a laugh first thing this a.m.

that was HI-larious, that really made me laugh on the inside. it was really well written as well, not only a bit goofy and out of the ordinary but also well put. I liked it and you should keep up your strangely beautiful works of art. i am glad those chickens escaped, but please don't hate me if I still find them delicious
all my best wishes to you,

    LOL!!

I most certainly wonder what on earth made you think of this!! lol!! it's cute, the way those chickens escape.. make a minute-long cartoon out of this. would be wonderful!

it really reminds me of a pic...
it had these three chickens with scared faces sitting in front of a "horror show".. that horror movie was an oven with chicken grilling inside..

    RUN!! CHICKEN, RUN!!!
