Remembrance

The cool, damp grass
Kneads into our bare shoulders
As we gaze up and up
Into the beauty of our world
Where Midnight spreads her blanket
Upon the backs of sleeping stars
And beneath your charcoal lashes
Is where they shine the brightest.
Remembrance is playing hide and seek tonight.
We’re looking back,
At the moments we shared,
Even when we were far apart.

We can remember…
The way our freckles used to paint
Our sunburned cheeks and noses
After a long day of hopscotch in the park.
We would take the long way home,
Past the evergreen trees rich with pinecones,
And through the meadow where we pretended
We were on a journey through the safari
And where we could talk to all the wild animals.
We would walk slowly, holding hands,
Eating a Tootsie Pop,
Trying to figure out how many licks it takes to reach the center--
Then losing count because we spotted a bee or exotic butterfly.
At night we’d have our pillow fights,
Laughing until we fell over because our sides burned,
And staying up until the sun peeked through our skylight windows
To kiss us both good morning.

Then suddenly--those pillows we used to fight with--
Were dampened by tears.
Tears of anger, tears of loss.
Our faces became gaunt.
Our eyes lost and guarded.
Lips became mute,
And words were trapdoors.
Misery took over our reasons for being alive
And rejection became our excuse to walk with the dead.
Yet somehow,
We clung to each other,
Even when we were both falling.
Our struggles gave us some balance
And soon we became stronger.
‘Maybe living isn’t so rough after all.’
We said.
‘Maybe these milestones are here to keep us in line--
To help us remember who we are.
To give us something to leave behind
When it’s our turn to be gone.’
We won’t go down without a fight.
Everything’s so different.
But now we’re ready to handle it,
Together.

The cool, damp grass
Kneads into our bare shoulders
As we gaze up and up
Into a fresh start filled with possibilities
Where there is no more fear.
We are safe when we’re together.
It’s been one hell of a ride, my friend,
It’s been one hell of a ride.

Only one editorial comment for line 9. Not compulsory, but I think I'd prefer "hide-and-seek" hyphenated.

I'll comment further when judging. Thank you for your entry! :
