Literature

All Feel Her.

The vindication of the exalting power of ageless
Words is topped upon the young poetess’ brow
And it inspires a yearning for such tempting questions
As to render most modest souls
Into a tempest of repugnant suspense

Yet, all see her.

Her silhouette dances between dusty volumes
Of books spelling out law
And she weeps as all spirits bow down
In submission to the insipid, emotionless words
And as each tear cascades onto the impassive bark
A stain is left in the shallow foundation of her monotonous world

Still, all hear her.

The west wind of question is braided unto her voice
And all condemn her striking, intoxicating words
To those belonging to a succubus

Yet, all love her.

For she is the daughter of Plato,
The niece of Socrates,
The sister of Homer,
The twin of Dante,
The wife of Shakespeare,
And the mother of Poe

And all are bound to be enthralled
By the fathomless power belonging to those ageless words
Perched upon her young, poetic brow

Forever, all will feel her.

Author notes

I am indebted to literature and all her majestic creations. She causes me to strive to find myself and who I am. She inspires my personal beliefs and causes me to question and justify them. What better friend could I have devoted myself to? She is the most important piece of me.

brilliant. wonderful metaphor of literature being a woman, and i especially like this part:

For she is the daughter of Plato,
    The niece of Socrates,
    The sister of Homer,
    The twin of Dante,
    The wife of Shakespeare,
    And the mother of Poe

Thank you. I actualy did a little research on that part. I made sure I had the great writers listed in order by who came first and so on...Then I got in a little quarrel with my friend about the mother, daughter, sister thing...I kept saying that someone couldn't be the mother of someone and then a sister of someone that came after them! Lol. I tend to get a little technical sometimes! I'm really glad you enjoyed my poem and thank you very much for the applauds!

oh wow this was extremely brilliant, I love the the metaphor of it being like woman, it's true it's one of the oldest form of communication that has evoled and changed but never died off. there is are classic books still in print today and there is some much litaure that has been lost forever so who knows what were missing out on. I truly enjoyed this poem I really love this part here -

Thank you for the comment and applaud. I did a little research on the great writers and the mother daughter thing. I had to have everything in a logical order. Lol. I tend to get technical. But once again, thank you!!!

    Wow this is great!

I love the way you have personified Literature! and wow what a way to dedicate the power of words ( within a poem!)

That she is a temptress that lures people to read and write to learn the list goes on and on. In fact your poem made me think about llife and how literature is part of every day life even if you don't read often or have problems with spelling and grammer.
What a great subject you have chosen.
Very unique you went so abstract. Very inspiring.

"inspires a yearning for such tempting questions
As to render most modest souls
Into a tempest of repugnant suspense"

I love your juxtaposition and your use of opposites in this verse. It symbolises to me that the world would be lost and unstable without literature. and that modest people are given urges and emotions and unbearable suspense. Very well written and I like the adjectives you used really stretching language to the limits.

"Her silhouette dances between dusty volumes
    Of books spelling out law
And she weeps as all spirits bow down
In submission to the insipid, emotionless words
And as each tear cascades onto the impassive bark
A stain is left in the shallow foundation of her monotonous world"

Thios is my favorite part of the poem your metaphorical imagery is simply beautiful. I read this over and over again because I loved it so much.
Dusty volumes of law as if justice and literature go hand in hand. and you language is great "insipid" "cascades" "monotonous"

    "Yet, all see her."
It was also very clever the way you used the senses to heighten your image of literature.
without huge details of her features you named products of literature and that shaped her image between the lines of a book.
    This is fantastic. BRAVO!!!!
    I hope you win
