Hymn To Arunachala

Missing image
Oh Arunachala
Hill of Wisdom
Abode of Lord Shiva
Whose Nature is Absolute Stillness

Draw me to You
Like a magnet attracts iron
Lest my mind shall find no rest
And my constant anguish no dissolution

Tears of longing
Will fall from my weary eyes
Until You embrace me
And make me One with You
Oh Arunachala

Lost in worldly illusion
My restless mind
Holds me in its hungry claws
Preventing me from surrendering
My life to Your Holy Feet

How shall this lonely child of Yours find Peace
If not through Your Grace
Oh Arunachala ?

I am weary
Of the vicious circle of pleasure and pain
That keeps me imprisoned
In Samsara’s sandcastle
My soul seeks to soar in Freedom

Grant me only one glance of Your Beauty
For only Your Vision will liberate me
From this dark abyss of suffering
So come quickly
And rescue Your child
From the cruel snare of Maya
Oh Arunachala

You
Who roots out the ego of those
Who meditate on Your Form
And who realize
Their identity with You
In their heart
Won’t You show any pity
For this helpless child
Oh Arunachala ?

Come and remove
Those soiled garments of ignorance
From me
So I may stand in naked innocence
Before Your Throne
Waiting to be wrapped
In the Holy Robe
Of Your Love
Oh Arunachala

Render me
As subtle as ether
So I may merge with You
In utter rapture and Bliss

Let my only repose
Be Lord Shiva’s Abode
Which is Your Own Heart

Let me find
Lasting Peace
In Your Holy Embrace

Capture me in Stillness
Wrap me in Silence
Let me melt as Love
In Thee
Like a river
Merging with the Ocean
Oh Arunachala

Hill of Patience
Have Mercy with me
I have nothing to offer you
But this humble garland of words

But aren’t these words
Your Very Own Words
Offered to Yourself
By Yourself ?

For You Are
The Mind of my mind
The Heart of my heart
My very own Self
Oh Arunachala

Author notes

Arunachala is a hill located in Tiruvanamalai (South of India) and considered to be Lord Shiva’s abode … To walk around the sacred hill in an attitude of worship is called “giripradakshina” and said to remove sins, fulfil desires and free the devotee from future births …

The above hymn is inspired by the teachings of the Indian sage Sri Ramana Maharshi, whose ashram is located at the feet of Arunachala

I thought this was really cool. This reminded me of a poetic play, as if one of the characters were speaking to another character. It just had that feel to it.
I like how you were metaphorical in the beginning---I wish you could have carried that style throughout..in the middle you went from metaphorical to straight-forward. As much as I think the poem would have been better if the style was more uniform, I still think this was awesome. Definitely deserving of both golds. Thanks for entering and good luck.

thank you from my heart for the gold trophy, dear david ... besides the great joy your award and generous gift of points bestows on me, there was a hidden message for me in this contest, which you delivered to me by grace : I had desperately tried to write a hymn for amma, but failed - so I entered one poem in homage to a hindu goddess and another one to the mountain of shiva, representing pure consciousness ... asking for divine guidance about the path to take from now on : 1. devotion to and veneration of the physical incarnation of the divine in the holy form of my spiritual mother (which I am pursuing and will pursue throughout eternity), 2. the adoration of the divine with form (god - goddess) or 3. honoring the formlessness of the divine (pure consciousness)

in awarding me your approval of my "hymn to arunachala", the message has been received ... and confirms several signs of guidance and insight I have been graced with in the last few days ... thank you so much for being a messenger of the divine ...

Beautiful poem! The last few lines were just enchanting! the flow, the meaning, the depth! Great work. I'm not sure if this Arunachala is the same as Arunachala Pradesh which lies in the north-eastern parts of India.
    Just loved reading the poem.
    *hugs*

    Intriguing

I read this several times, absorbing what I could, but not fully able to grasp the whole meaning. It is a lovely writing and calmed my mind as I read. I was fascinated with this hill and its legend. You write beautifully, my dear one.

    mystic prayer

Flow of words like a mystics prayer , calling on
solitude and humility , images of ancient cosmic religion of the universe and its communion in an abode
    hallowed to creation.

Oh dear! This is great! The flow is so fast and hard hitting, I get a spiritual feeling but so many things go through my mind. Is it Arunachala the mountain where the Hindu God Shiva lives? I need a little help here. Isn’t he the destroyer of the world?

    Love,

    Masterpiece!

You have painted a peaceful and fulfilling picture of Arunachala in my mind's eye. The sacredness and holiness of this place, as well as the look and feel. Quite educational too. It sounds like a wonderful place to "get away" from it all, and walk around and meditate.
