Why I Fight

It lurks between the paper and my pen.
It criticizes, taunts, and saps my will.
It stops me, blocks me, holds me back again.
It can't create, or think, but it can kill.

Resistance is the enemy I face.
Resistance tells me what I cannot do.
Resistance tries to keep me in my place.
Resistance knows my failings through and through.

I know that I must face him every day.
I know resistance plays upon my fear.
I know I have important things to say.
I know my muse will come if I am here.

And that is why I must keep up the fight.
And that is why I must sit here and write.

Author notes

After reading "The War of Art" by Steven Presnell, which explains that the enemy we fight in any creative pursuit is simple resistance to sit down and do the work. That slim book made a huge difference in my attitude toward my writing life. Highly recommended.

I like this, its very easy to read and expresses something that all of us should be able to easily understand as writers. Even broader tho, just as the fact of life that we are our enemies, we hold ourselves back with Cannots... and then said and done have would have should haves. Thanks for sharing.. good job.

Thank you for your kind comments, and welcome to the group! If resistance is your demon, do, do, do find a copy of The War of Art by Steven Presnell. I probably wouldn't be on this site and writing if I hadn't read that book.

    Wow!

I love this poem! It has a lot of rhyme and beat, which I absolutely like the best. It seems like you really took some time into making it just right. It also has a great message. I mean, at first I thought the topic was a little mean (fighting) but then I read it, and it turned out a completely different thing than I thought it would be. Awesome work!!!

I appreciate the read and the kind thoughts. This poem resonates for me at the moment. I've had a series of changes in my attitude of late that made me realize that I need to have more fun, write, draw, and generally feed my creative spirit.
