A flood of music
A sway of sweating bodies
A dance that seems so rhythmic
With your fair share of oddities
Prom night
Ups and Downs
People whirling, tears blurring sight
Zoot Suits, Tuxes, and Evening Gowns
Gossipping dolls
called popular by common mistake
With their fake nails and new shawls
The boys look at them with heartache
Mystery in the air
A few guys wonder
Do they dare?
Do they dare pursue the virgin plunder
Prom night
Ups and Downs
People whirling, tears blurring sight
Zoot Suits, Tuxes, and Evening Gowns
Bathrooms full of sticky teens
Checking the hair, the lip gloss, the eyes
Glares between girls, much more than mean
A heartbroken girl cries
A guy shatters her heart,
Tears burst from that spot
She runs away before he can even start
Her evening is now shot
Prom night
Ups and Downs
People whirling, tears blurring sight
Zoot Suits, Tuxes, and Evening Gowns
In another scene
Guys and Gals breaking it down
The girls look good, they guys shaved clean
After this, a night on the town
Oh Prom night,
How you can be heaven,
How you can be hell
And yet how well your tickets sell!

Wow, this was very well written. I loved the narrative aspect and the soft and gentle intelligence sprinkled throughout this. The subtle rhyme was great. I usually don't like rhyme, but you rhymed very, very well! I almost didn't notice. Your repeating stanza was quite unique and I loved the modern touch to it. The wit of your last stanza was a great relief amongst the previous drama. That made this seem all the more realistic. Prom really seems like that, does it not? On one hand, fake girls...on the other...the heartbroken and those just trying to stay true to themselves. It all seems to conflict, but ends up reliving itself in that mysteriously funny way.
Thank you so much for entering. <3
