fairy tales of crib whispers
spoken by parental tales to a napping unconscious.
Kept alive in those cherished fantasy flights,
as the numinous specters of one's breaths and desires.
Seeing magic foretold and spectacle,
a glitter in the twilight of faith's
many opiates --
fancy's narcotic
giving fixes through visions of dragons, fairies, witches,
which we inhale as an euphoric incense
that we might
embrace holiday lore
with ecstasy and anticipation where the impossible
comes true.
Youth surrenders to age's reality,
death knell seconds
slay innocent's mysticism.
Never realizing how in our practical
atheism,
one has unintentionally slain
all the invisible charmed creatures
born from our virgin senses.
Elysium's gossamer chattel withers and dies
each time a heart
passes into the cold harsh realm,
where the world's dimensions
have such fleeting layers.
Hope in horizon's not yet reached,
fades into a cranial chasm
called
disbelief.
Author notes
I commented on Watery Grave. Was a great piece stirring all the fabulous mythological images.
Commented on Dream Roses. Love the personalized nature of the right, making the image so human.
Commented on Icarus. A wonderful short piece describing the one being so well.

You definitely leave us wondering what happened to the innocence and wonder of out youth. You've touched on some great images. Your last lines give the poem a harsh finality. We all fall into that horrible habit of disbelieving. Thanks for making me think so hard! >pixxie<

Such great classical reference you have added in your poem:
Elysium's gossamer chattel withers and dies
each time a heart
passes into the cold harsh realm,
You have described the hindrances to flowing new thoughts, and your descriptions are eloquent and evocative. I really liked how you took the picture and made such a great statement about how disbelief can hold back those who believe. Very well done, good luck in the contest!
