Sleep

Sleep, my little child
Close your eyes in peace
Do not fear the night around you
Find comfort in release

The trees are watching o'er you
The evening stars are winking
Do not fear the wood around you
As the sun is slowly sinking

The grass and earth shall hold you
And shall cradle you to sleep
Do not fear the stirring shadows
Or the dark that falls so deep

The leaves will whisper softly
And the moonlight kiss your cheek
Do not fear the dreams that take you
Find the answers that you seek

The crickets sing so sweetly
The owls call to the night
Do not fear the creatures round you
Just be still, my little sprite

Sleep, my little cherub
Find peace in slumber sweet
Do not fear the world around you
Where the trees and sky do meet

The shadows shelter silence
The twilight lingers still
The call of birds is fading
The heat of day will chill

And in the hues of azure
In the shades of sapphire sky
Sweeping o'er the woods and rivers
Listen to my lullaby

For the earth shall be your mother
And the moon shall soothe your soul
The trees shall mend your spirit
And the night shall make you whole

Author notes

Written June 4th.
I wrote this while listening to Waterfall by Enya; it's a lovely piece of instrumental music and this poem is just long enough to be read with the music.

This is absolutely beautiful and well deserving of the trophy. Both your words and voice are soothing and with Waterfall playing in the background, I would imagine any baby would close their eyes and sleep.

    Congratulations...Sue

Thanks to everyone for their wonderful comments! I'm so very glad that I have the AP seal of approval, hehe. Oddly, I've had this on YouTube for a couple months and never got any comments, but on AP the comments have been pouring in. Thank you so much! I think you've all inspired me to try my hand at another of my poems, though I have yet to decide which one.... Blessings on all!
