A Slice of Cake for Everyone

I bought birthday hats for my dog and cat.
I bought balloons filled with helium.
Sucking in the helium from a balloon, I laughed.
Everything is as perfect as it will ever be.

The cake sits in a frost cover glow in the brightly lit room.
This is not just any other cake- this is my last birthday cake.
The mail has already come- and for those that are wondering...
Nope, nobody sent me a birthday card.
Nope, nobody cares about my unimportant life.
Why would they?
I guess that this is as good as it will ever be.

I take a picture, my calico cat, in his birthday hat, who remained in a nonchalant attitude.
My dog was eager to take a few candid photographs that by all means was childishly  selfish.
My animals are the only thing in the world that love me.
I suppose that their love is as good as it will ever be.

I sit down at the table and open my birthday card.
I wrote the card  myself but I still enjoy the false sense of love.
I read the words I wrote on the card,
“A forgotten nobody.”
The devil laughs at the card and snickers, that is as good as it will ever be.

I move the cake to a smaller table in front of couch.
Come here rosebud, I call my ridiculously named dog.
He sits on the couch as I grab Poe- my cat.
Placing the camera on the tripod I set it for twenty second.
I nestle next to my animals on the couch.
The camera ticks
5
4
3
My hand reaches for it
2
1
I scream my life over blood.

Happy Birthday to me.

wow that was amazingly good. For a sad poem i think its one of the most vivid descriptions of what people feel like in extremities when they are so alone.

This piece is a sad reminder that there are many who wander aimless and alone through life.

I sit down at the table and open my birthday card.
I wrote the card myself but I still enjoy the false sense of love.
I read the words I wrote on the card,
    “A forgotten nobody.”

I scream my life over blood.

    Happy Birthday to me.

These two sections I've picked are soooooo powerful. It's sad to say, but I've felt this way myself before. I didn't celebrate my 40th birthday with my pet cat though...I simply didn't celebrate it at all. Sad isn't it?

This piece spoke to me, and I thank you for that AtiVan.

Good luck to you in this contest!

I've worked with people with mental health problems and this really resinates..........inanimate objects become family. The love for self is not false though and is probably the most important real love you will ever receive. Great read conveying pure hopelessness. My favourite line is 'Sucking in the helium from a balloon, I laughed'.

...If you had invited me, I would've came. And I would have brought a home-made birthday card, covered in stickers and reassurances of friendship, and I'd bring something delicious, like muffins. And maybe I'd take the picture, even though I'm not so good at holding things steady. If you had invited me.

That was so dark, happy in a way and then gloomy in another. Very nice idea, unordinary.

Wow, that was incredible. I almost felt like I was watching someone losing there mind because they feel as if no one loves them. I love the way that throughout the poem you are talking about how your animals are the only thing that love you. It was so sad but it was sos trange. Something about it just really draws me in. I think it is just the raw, dark feeling of the piece. I love this but then again I love all dark pieces. I thought it was really good. I want to see another one like this.
