A Vision

A vision in the night that is not so hard to see.
A man carrying bags passes right in front by me.
A woman in a doorway to sleep the night away.
A couple in a shelter; where homeless people stay.

A vision that we see yet ignore most of the time.
A woman with a cup; and you won’t give her a dime.
A child’s only meal will come at her school today.
A man stands on a corner begging as you drive away.

We ignore them and avoid them as we walk on by.
Sadly we do not care if we did we would surely cry.
We have lost our compassion; even become irate.
Wishing they’d get a job so to them we can relate.

Why do they live each day with this kind of strife?
Why are they here living such a hard knock life?
A few of them just want to, but that is rather rare.
Some made bad choices that left them in despair.

Yes alcohol and drugs for some came in to play.
Others got real sick and the bills they couldn’t pay.
Many lost their jobs, so they couldn’t pay the rent.
Some it’s mental problems; to the street they are sent.

It doesn’t matter why each one of them is here.
Open up your mind and listen with each ear.
To avoid and ignore them is not the thing to do.
Look into the eyes that are looking back at you.

We must all help them out in any way that we can.
It is something we must do for all our fellow man.
So when you see a person filled with such defeat.
Do what you can to help them get back to their feet.

I know a woman and her (grown-up) son disappeared years ago. They just found out that he´s probably homeless. Now, every time she sees a person, who´s homeless , she gives him some money thinking it could be her son.
You´re right ,we can also help a lot with listening. Or just a cup of warm tea. Perhaps your poem can take (even if they are just a few ) the fear or indifference of some people and they see your poem as appeal to help. Nicely done.

Thank you for the applause and comments. There are so many ways to help the homeless, or even help before it gets that close. If this poem gets just one person to start helping end homelessness it will be a success. I do alot of helping with the City Union Mission, Here is there link if you would like to see what they do. www.cityunionmision.org
