Ritual observance of the fallen.
Memory of war heroes past and today.
All the sacrifice we hold deep inside,
marks this occasion with fast falling tears
Drum memory, flag folding, marks the hour.
Another young soldier payed dearly wars due.
Traumatic tracing the tears as they fall.
Dark anguish breaks, in all who hold him dear.
Mother, Daughter, Wife and Child,
dream that this end is just minds dark game.
When they awake all will not have changed.
Father, Son, Husband are still standing tall.
Acres of headstones as far as eye sees
testimony to this land and peace
Freedom won, but, at what cost.
Important for future, we defend this loss.
Price of one life? A single bullet.
Shot for freedom, both sides claim the right.
Ask this soldier would he do it again?
His answer would be a resounding - AMEN!
One thing I find missing on the street.
Patriotism you have to look deep.
Stop the war! Is all that is heard.
Stop the killing, we must be heard!
This war is wrong on this I agree
But young men are dying or can't you see.
Many joined when there was no war.
Trapped by command they must forward surge.
On this day of memory lay it aside
Stop for a moment hold this deep inside.
Young men are dying as orders they follow.
Think for a moment and then try to cry.

Your final line says it all. We mourn the loss of soldier, each young life. Anger is so much easier than tears, then grief. We leave the greiving to so few.
This is a very solid, very poignant, thought provoking piece.

good
I loved this poem and the way it was written such conviction and whole heartedness. standing up for what is right happens everyday its the soldiers standing in the line of fire that make our kids want to be more. good luck in the contest and keep hope sooner or later people will see the war maybe wrong but the men and women who are dying are dying in the face of their orders

Definitely a fitting piece for our Memorial Day weekend. Your use of language fitted well into the emotions you set out to portray. You show knowledge in what you have written. Nicely done.
Good luck.
