Out of Sight, Out of My Mind

If I do not see it, I do not believe it?

If I do not experience it, it must have never transpired?

Out of sight, out of my mind

It never happened if I never saw it,

And if what they say is happening is true,

I live here, and it is there

It's not in my life; it's not in my mind

A questionably inquiry to ask,

If it's not happening to me, should I care?

Should I know?

Should I ask?

If I do not see war, does that mean it doesn’t exist?

If I do not see genocide, does that mean its not occurring?

If I never go hungry or homeless, does that mean others do not as well?

Out of everyday occurrences, out of worry

If it does not affect me, could I even bother?

Is it of significance?

If only things were as simple as "Out of sight, out of mind"

Then maybe I could sleep at night,

Then maybe I would be able to live without pity,

But despite this ignorance,

Maybe I could let go,

Out of sight, out of my mind

If I am well, does that mean no one ever becomes ill?

Does disease even exist?

If I am alive, does that mean death will never come?

Has anyone ever even proven death first hand?

Things are never as simple as black and white,

There is always gray in between

Out of sight, out of my mind isn't a state of consciousness

But a state of imprisonment

No one cannot, not care

No one cannot, not know

I can't keep living in this idle lie

I can't keep living in this cold shallow thought

I have to respond

I have to have a voice

Even if I never envision it, it's never out of thought

Out of sight, out of my mind

Never.

Woah... This poem blew me away. I never expected this type of entry, but I LOVE it! It's honest and shows the truth of the callousness of society. It's amazing and I hope that someday someone will read this and get a big slap in the face and change their selfish view of the world. Thank you for entering my contest and best of luck!
