Red White and Blue

Two old worn tattered flags
Two triangular shaped ones too,
These sit on my closet shelves
The three colors, red, white, and blue

These treasured flags belonged to my dad and grandpa
Grandpa did his time in World War Two,
The most patriotic man I've ever known
He would weep when he saw red, white, and blue

I'm so glad they are living in heaven
They don't have to fret what to do,
Will never again have to leave their wife and children
To fight for their proud red, white, and blue

My father also fought the fight
The Air Force was what he chose to do,
So this Iraq thing shall also haunt me
As I gaze at three colors, red, white, and blue

Author notes

I'm thinking of maybe rewriting this one. I have so much more to add. written 2/5/2003

    The flag

The flag of our fathers is no different then the one for our sons. The sad state of affairs is that we, those that judge, have become different. We live easy because of the brave that bear arms and believe. I wonder what our fathers & gradfathers would think now

This poem speaks of pride and patriotism and honour and I have to say I like it and even though I am not American I honour the Red,Blue and White flag...you should check out my poems Our American Flag and Real American Hero on my page.

I love the meaning and emotion behind this piece. It is clear and profound and wonderfully thoughtful. The only quarrel I have is that it doesn't automatically flow in my mind, I had to read a few lines twice to find the right rythm. the wording was exceptional.

Am no poet and boy do I know it

I say that you said you were thinking about rewrite and when I read through the second time after you said a may be rewrite - something jumped out at me. It is the last two stanzas have do to rhyme with blue. May be that is what makes you think rewrite? May be something like in the third stanza here is a thought to play around with may be?
I'm so glad they are living in heaven
They have already have their due
Then it would be the same sounds but not the same word?

You will know what is best...love the three colors, red, white, and blue

OK on the fourth read through you could may be even eliminate do and put pursue...the Air Force was what he chose to pursue..

I read that you have written so many poems and so will so enjoy reading as many as I can. I hope you don't mind my suggestions...when you said may be a rewrite I thought you might be open to an oldish woman's after 3 am slants.

Love it...looked at the other site you post at and will enjoy trying that site out too.

    Exceptional work

There's a lot of thinking in this one going on, the there's much to reminisce over which to be quite honest, brings back mine, some words in here to make a tear or two, that's for sure, and it seems prevailing that the time depicted was even outreached of the ones you hoped,

it is excellent it reminds us of all our loved ones that are over fighting for our country. I have a nephew and my father fought in vietnam. I also just lost a brother in law that was in desert storm years ago. I think it would be wonderful extended, but It is great the way it is.
