Summer Dust

There’s inkling in the air
Chlorophyll is translucent for the afternoon
The sunlight comes pouring through
Leaves and dusty window panes
Tantalizes the west wind breeze
And carries away the scent of raising bread
Humming in tune to the rattling red truck
Pulling up in neutral spiking up dust
With you behind the wheel
The scent of clean cut grass and pollen follows you in

I knew you smelled my summer pie
Before you pulled into the driveway
Your first instinct is to smile
Your eyes lighting up behind your filthy sunglasses
You forget once again to leave your toolbox in the shed
Dropping to absently in the kitchen

There’s a piece of mind here in the summer
A subtle reminder of pure freedom and life
With gardens of weeds and occupied wild animals
It is comfortable here in Summerland
There’s a peace to crossing over, or simply staying here
Here sheltered by weatherworn wood
We are dipping into indulgence
With your settled love of summer

And one day we will turn in faith and pride
For there is something beyond this summer
But I’d rather stay behind

Please tell me what you think
