A Perfect Day

Missing image

I close my eyes
and remember the smell
of fresh sage as it rained
near the edge of the desert,

entering the mountains
as the salt air
from the ocean's whisper

cascaded into the valley
in wild waves.

I never knew Life could be
as beautiful
as this landscape unveiled
before us.

Clasping your hand,

I gasped
at the realization
and you smiled softly,

stroking my long hair
along with the wind.

We were going to California
and you were showing me the path
leading home.

I don't think
we ever completely returned
from this sacred journey

where our hearts discovered
love & laughter
breathing fresh & free...

My first & only trip to the West Coast with my late sweetheart Don, in 1996. We journeyed up & down Highway 101 along the coastline, exploring sights & sighs along the way. We went to Yosemite & Sequoia National Parks. We didn't want to return to Oklahoma. My mother had grown up in California; I got to see things she'd talked about when I was just a child. It was beautiful. He bought pearl earrings for me in Laguna Beach. We ate lunch in Santa Barbara at a restaurant that someone recommended to us. He had the austere dignity of a retired military man; when Don asked for a good restaurant nearby, the man took one look at me & replied, "The Quiet Woman". I wonder how he knew I used to be a librarian. LOL.

Congratulations on winning the silver trophy for this fine memory of a poem, my Baby. You have told me about this trip a few times and it sounds like you really did have a good time and I'm glad that you have some good memories of your time together and that you were able to travel some, too.

A picture told with the essence of beauty that only you could pen. Remembering things of the past. "Quiet Woman, a resturant, a linraian...certainly not you dear friend. Your words speak volumes and are not quiet at all!" ~Sie
