Rainbow

Love.
What a strange word.
It seems to take up so much room in our hearts.
It seems like it shouldn’t be so important
But that selfsame ignorance is what leads to infinite disaster…

Grasping my heart, my soul
Unrealistically strong, the power it holds
I’m far too weak to comprehend its complexity
And with that selfsame ignorance it entwines itself within my heart

My heart squeezes at the sight of thee
Soft fingers pull at my heartstrings
Like a harp, and you are the melody it brings
I cannot help but feel drawn to you and your sinister perfection

I call your name, but you are never there
Brushing my fingertips as I reach out towards thee
You smile, shifting to another form, another way to torment
Your hold ever firm on my heart.

I call to thee again and again
I bid you hold me in my weakness
I urge you to help me in my inadequacy
For what lovers do not help one another?

My questions are unanswered
My statements left to ferment in the cold, apathetic air
My heart cries with futility
In the depths of your illusions, I am forgotten once more

I am abandoned, like a child chasing a rainbow
Beguiled by its beauty, disillusioned of its certainty
Desiring to find it, to know it, to hold it, to cherish it
But never perceiving the distance or the troubles ahead

To reach a rainbow, the distance is endless
So, must I realize, is the distance to thee
I will never find thee, never know thee
I will never hold thee, never cherish thee

But I cannot say I will never love thee
For though your image may be simply illusion
My heart cannot be deceived
Despite the influence you have placed upon it

My desire may be misplaced
Like the desire to caress a rainbow
Or slide down its seemingly slippery slopes
But it exists nonetheless

You are my rainbow
Beautiful, deceitful
Infinitely cruel and illusory
And always in my heart.

Author notes

I wanted to write a poem, and my best friend inspired me, talking about the illusory qualities of rainbows.
