a world away (gold trophy)

a world away you’ve gone for us

to keep us safe and free

you stand against all odds

and lay your life on the line

a name upon the screen of my pc

soon going off to war you’d be

you smiled and made us laugh

as we wished you God speed

you said goodbye, Momma Dee

said you wont forget me

you’re in my thoughts and prayers

and I’ll not forget you

not in a million years, no

and when you come back home to us

a man changed perhaps

but still the same sweet soul

I’ll welcome you

with open arms and heart

for we all owe so much

to our heroes and you’re one

you probably didn’t want to go

but you stand tall

and face your call to duty

with apprehension and hope

keep your head up

and your butt down for now

and know we all are grateful

for the job you’re doing for us

… may it soon be over

for Koenigsreich

one of our servicemen

in Iraq

Smiling....tell them Semper Fi for me as I am a Marine, oh, I am no longer in the Corps, having served 65 to 72, but it remains in me and always shall. this was sweetly done and I have no doubt he loved it as well as 'they' the other Marines he showed it to, for I know, he did.

    HOODWINKED

This is a very touching poem, especially since I had all three of my brothers go to war in Iraq. I loved how it flowed as well. Great Job

These lines were a great opening and hooked me for the whole poem.

You have been hood winked by the poetic bandits

    Hey Catz,

This is really nice. Both painful and heartfelt to go throuh... Of all goodbyes, one to a soldier setting out for war seems most difficult. I appreciate the positivity with which you approached such a sad topic.

    Get well and stay blessed.

    Much Love,
    Bob.

Thankyou so much, Momma Dee, and I know that the response time is a little slow (considering that the piece was written in May) but I can finally start to read all that you guys have written. I didn't know about this contest, and this poem alone made me start to cry. I'll be home soon, and then we can talk, just like old times.

    Semper Fidelis,
    Koenigsreich

I had to say a big TY for this for, although not at that point now, i had a former son-in-law in adghanistan and my son is signed in to the Marines and will join them come next June (as i count down the days with trepidation, he with excitement and anticipation) I truly hope he will not see the fighting, for my sakew, and yet I do honor and respect the ones that are/have done so. Best of luck in this and all of your endeavors. Hetohke'e

A beautiful poem for an Ugly War, your heart is in
this poem. Maybe soon those that lead us will find
the sense to sort disputes out without sacrificing
    the flowers of humanity.

But it was ever thus, we need more women in charge
in the world, saying that, we had one who was more
    like Boudica (Margaret Thatcher)

In your sixth verse, you write.
You probably didn`t want to go.
I wonder that any actually do. Such brave children.
I wish him a safe journey home soon.

Thank you, Dixie for such a nice comment. Koenigsreich is kinda special to me, and when I saw this contest, I knew I had to write something. As I was writing it, though, I thought of the other members of AP who are in the service of our country. I know there are a lot more than what I'm familiar with.

Koen used to call me Momma Dee And always took the time to IM me from time to time to keep me updated as to what was going on with his upcoming Iraq destination. He's there now and is due back in October. I pray he'll stay safe from harm.

Thank you for reading and commenting on this poem. I thought of you when I was writing it as well as of Koen. We owe a lot to you both, as well as all the others who are helping to protect us.

Beautiful... Simply beautiful... This poem left me speechless. I love everything about it and i found no flaws in this piece at all... If there were flaws the beauty of this poem canceled it all out... I am stunned and i can't think of anymore words to describe this piece except Beautiful.

Thank you for your kind comment. It was written as a labor of love and appreciation, especially for Koen but also for our other AP members who are in the service of our country.
