Prairie Lullaby

The campfire light’s a dimmin’ and the stars are overhead
My saddle is my pillow as I get my blanket spread
The day has been a long one riding fences ‘cross the range
But breathing in the cool night air there’s not a thing I’d change

The prairie wind’s soft whisper greets the hooting of an owl
Soon the song is answered by a lonesome coyote’s howl
Here beneath the prairie skies is just where I should be
The only place that’s fitting for an ole cowpoke like me

I’m wayward as the winds that blow across the prairie lands
As errant as the tumbleweed that rolls ‘cross desert sands
But here upon the range is where my restless heart’s at ease
A saddled pony, boots, and hat to make my memories

Out here upon the prairie as the day comes to an end
I think about the miles of fence that I must ride and mend
But tomorrow is another day so here beneath the sky

I’ll listen as the prairie sings its gentle lullaby

It was high time I checked out an older write of yours to see some of the gems I missed out on. Love this piece, and I'm shocked it hasn't gotten far more attention than it has. The rhythm and imagery work together beautifully to create a wonderful picture of the satisfaction that comes from working hard and doing the job right, as well as the joy of simply enjoying nature.

You write it so well I wish I could be there.
This is a great poem describing a place and a way of life that is oh so rare in our mechanistic world.

I admire the way you're able to make your poems flow so naturally without any flaws in it. Your rhyme is amazing and the stories and pictures you paint to the readers minds is just brilliant. This is such a beautiful piece of just a simple moment that you are able to discribe as if it was the only moment of life that matters. I love this one; wonderful work

You quietly yet very effectively paint a picture of what it must feel like to live a life alone on the prairie.
I was desperate to find a fault with the text so I could complain about the flow (you're so bloody good that it gets on my frigging nerves!), and all I could come up with was coyote, which, in England is pronounced with 3 syllables, but I bet you Yankee gits use only 2, which would make the flow absolutely perfect!
Well done old lad - have the big clap!
    Robin.
PS I've re-read it and found a small fault!
UPon the prairie, 1st line, last verse, would flow better.

This is very lyrical and i feel best read aloud to hear the words as they roll off the tongue with ease. You have a good rhyme pattern with imagery that paints the picture yet it if fueled with emotional expression. A pleasure to read thank you. nicely penned.Good luck with the contest
