Snuffle The Dragon

Missing image

Daddy asked me if I'd come

and help to clear the weeds,

being six I want to help him

plant out all his seeds.

Excitedly I joined him

I didn’t really mind,

we set about our task

not knowing what we’d find.

Job half done, we took a break

thankful for the rest,

sitting there upon the ground

we found a little nest.

Was it a bird's or maybe mouse

we really didn’t know,

then before our very eyes

something began to glow.

A tiny little dragon,

all green and fast asleep

curled up in a tiny ball,

we took a closer peep.

‘Atishoo’ came a tiny sound,

a little puff of smoke,

he woke and started coughing,

I thought that he would choke.

I picked him up and held him

he seemed to have a cold,

I smiled and called him Snuffle,

I was feeling very bold.

There really was no worry,

he seemed to be at home

sat there in my tiny hand

never more to roam.

We became the best of friends

Snuffles, Dad and I,

we made a little shelter

to keep his warm nest dry.

He was great at barbeques

and fires to burn the weeds,

just one sneeze would send a flame

and answer all our needs.

As time went on and I grew up

and Snuffle used to wander,

until one day he disappeared

and left me here to ponder

Just where do little dragons go

when children get too old

to play and while away the days,

new gardens I’ve been told.

So if you see a little nest

don’t make a lot of noise,

a dragon might be looking for

some little girls and boys.

delightful poem and again a deserving winner. There must be hundreds of wonderful poems on here going back years if only one had the time to read them all. Sometimes I feel like a child in a sweet shop

This is an adorable, wonderful piece. I read the silver winner in this contest and found it hard to imagine that anything topped it. That was a totally different style, but this poem is a joy to read as well, and I know I'd have had a hard time picking either one, as both are well deserving of gold. Congrats on a gem of a poem, and a small shelf of trophies to go with it.

    Take care befriending dragons
    They can grow very large
And then you'll need to find a knight
To mount his horse and charge

    And fix your massive dragon
    Before he starts to roam
    And burn the countryside around
    Before he flies back home

    I enjoyed your little story
    And trust your dragon may
    Not do anything too gory
Stay small, and like to play

Thank you Keith, what can I say
You gave me gold and made my day
      Snuffle will be very pleased
He has a nest up in the trees

He grew in size, but not too big
Half way between a dog and pig
But now he lives down on the farm
Where he doesn't do a lot of harm

He has the freedom of the land
And is often known to lend a hand
He'll herd the cows and round up sheep
when on the job he'll never sleep

So should you see a little glow
Off in the distance , just for show
It's Snuffle showing off his flame
To him now it's become a game.

      Thanks again Keith.

This is adorable! It ought to be illustrated as a children's book!

  • Aww another good one Sue! My favorite stanza in this was "He was always great at barbeques and fires to burn the weeds, just one sneeze would send a flame, and answer all our needs." hehe I thought it was cute.

  • Such a cute write! =3 I love the rhyming! Great job!

My daughter wrote a wonderful piece about a boy 'night riding' a dragon. She is 'weejumpa' and the dragon piece isn't hard to find... Darling story. Explains a lot about you...

This was fantastic!! So cute, loved your rythme and story telling style. Also, the way you ended it makes us grown ups think of the truth as of where dragons go when we're too old to play with them.
    Thanks for entering.

    Much love

I didn't find this really fluid in all honestly and not at all what i'm used to from you but then again it is meant for kids... But then again I haven't grown up yet... but then again this would look a lot different in the eyes of a child but then ag... Ahh, never mind. Nice poem.

    Wonderful writing

That was great. The imagery was great too. Wonderful ryhimg in this. Very very adorable piece this was. This tells of a more innocent time in a someone's life. A time when wide-eyed children would gaze at the world around them - and wonder.
