when someone told me
years ago
I was getting to be
just like my mother
I cringed and
shook my head
NO, I was defiant
now if someone
says that
I smile
and nod my head -
YES, a real compliment

Excellent write, I think alot of people fear they are going to end up like their mother or father but it's not always a bad thing, there are alot of great parents out there and I think it's great that some of us can take what we've learned from them and use it in their own lives. Thanx for entering and good luck.

It is so funny how that happens. Very well said, I think everyone hits this realization about midway through. Good luck in the contest.

Been there, done that
Indeed. Only at 7 or 8 years old, I didn't have the grace to only shake my head! I blurted out to my aunt (who had made the comment), "What a horrible thing to say!" and ran from the room. Of course, my Mom was in the room, with the assorted other relatives at the gathering. We enjoy our closeness now.
What a lovely job you have done of describing the change we undergo as we grow to really appreciate our mothers.
I like the balance of 'shook my head' and 'nod my head', the big NO, and the big YES. I applaud how you were able to paint such a full picture with so few words.

I know exactly what you are saying in this poem. I have been told for many years by everyone that I'm so much like my Mother, and yes it is a compliment. Well done indeed and I wish you all the best in this contest

Lovely, I love being compared to my dear Mother, I sometimes see her when looking in the mirror at myself!
A lovely compliment you give to your Mother here.
