Los Desaparecidos

Los desaparecidos, those who disappeared.
Abducted at night, the worst fate to be feared.
To have spoken one word too many, or one word too loud,
The very next day, to vanish in the crowd.
Thousands, taken, one by one
Fathers, and brothers, and husbands, and sons.

Through mother’s pain and families’ grief
Hope clings to one impossible belief,
One day, they wish, he will be found,
Not lost, in an unmarked grave in the ground.

Weeks of torture, and long, drawn-out death.
He can do nothing but wait for his one last breath,
While the officers next door drink and feast
No cares, indifferent to the increasing deceased.

The years have passed, how many have not returned?
How many people have cried and have yearned?
How many of these portraits plastered on these walls,
Will never respond to their families’ calls?
How many more lives will they claim?
Los desaparecidos: the government’s shame.

Author notes

This is from a projet for Latin American History. I usually can't rhyme, I can't hear rhymes in english very well because it is my second language, so I hope it's OK.

Splendid! You speak of an ongoing problem in this country. Many people are not aware of how serious this topic is, and how many people have been affected and still are being affected. Thank you for putting into words what I've always felt and haven't been able to express! Excellent piece!

You did very well at keeping a tight ryhme scheme going. Straight through the poem you express the major points of interest when discussing this topic. The facts, and the emotional toll on the poeple that this problem effects. Fear, pain, the suffering that the missing and their families go through. The havoc that is wrought on the communities. Very well written.

    Brave and Beautiful

Your hold on the english language is pretty tight. This poem is like the sombra of all the war and struggle that latin america has been home too. And to all the wars now...Thank you for this, I haven't read something new from you in a long time.
