it was a long day, filled with long pauses,
and drawn out exhales.
the end was near, approaching with speed.
but we, in our youth, found it easy to outrun.
they say "taxes and death" are the only promises
you were racing death, and it looked like it was in your favor.
but then you hit the ice

The closing line was really a great end.
In the last line,
"than" should be "then"
