Remembering Icarus

Missing image
To earth he falls, his wings in disarray,
his father’s toil with string and wax unwound,
by sun’s sharp glare of heat at mid of day,
to bring the screaming boy to where he drowned.

Ashamed, the father then to reason turns,
experiments with heat at hot midday,
and finds sunlight, when concentrated, burns,
leaves only ash when all is scorched away.

So Daedalus now knows the reason why
his trial to send his boy up to the sun
was bound to fail up there in heaven’s sky
and bring to naught the hope with which begun.

So, those of you, who to such tests have turned,
take care, make sure you also are not burned.
