Where I Belong

Missing image

                                Original Artwork by Renelle Sommerville
                                                         Media:  Pastel

Oh glor’ous light that ends my day,

Caressing as I stand and pray,

And draws me to this dawning year,

While beckoning from far away.

On this day’s morn I stood right here

And dreamed my dreams as light drew near,

Exactly as I’ve always done,

Filled up with hope . . . ‘midst all my fear.

A picture of the rising sun,

As all my birthdays have begun.

Another one at evensong,

Approaching dark’s oblivion.

But somehow life has gone so wrong.

If only I were wise and strong,

And could go back where I belong,

And could go back where I belong.

Author notes

One more collaboration with Reni's art. She told me a little story that goes with this one.

Her birthday was just a few days ago and she has a tradition of getting up early and taking a photo of the sunrise and then taking another of the sunset. She was thinking of that when she created this beauty.

She's originally from England and dreams of some day going back there.

Thanks again, Reni, for sharing.

And for those of you who don't check the contest, this was modeled after Stopping By the Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost.

This is sooo unfair Paul Dont be offended at this cause you have a natural talent at rhyming while I look like a timid mouse at rhyming. Nevertheless, I loved how this told a story within a story. Keep penning

    Journey of Life

One's heart nor soul could guide us to where we belong only our internal being knows where we really belong in life.....

The journey in which we all seek to take is a life long one...

    Great Write....

Excellent meter and rhyme - and what an interesting story.
This tradition of praying the sunrise and sunset gives good structure to the poem. The birthday meditation is very sad. My experience shows that we can't go back, however much we wish to.

Pops, this is a wonderful piece! I love your writings and I've sorry that I've missed reading so many of them! Work calls far too often for me it seems...

This piece is extraordinary... really good! The flow is perfect and the repeating of the last line brings it home and makes a powerful point...

I find myself wishing that I could find where I belong... it seems there IS no place that I belong... and so I feel somewhat incomplete...

Anyway... this piece is awesome Pops... as always!!!

    Much love to you...

    ~Melissa

Wow...I just got emotional and teary reading this, Paul.
I really, really don't know how you do it... It's, like, you knew exactly what I was thinking and feeling. Looking at that poem, from where it starts to where it ends, I can't disagree with one word of it.

It speaks every single word I feel most of the time. It made me homesick, but then again almost everything makes me homesick.
You're such a amazing writer. I really, really love this poem. It's has become my favourite by far.

    Love,
    -Reni the Granddaughter-ish.

What an interesting tradition for Reni to take pictures of the sunrise and sunset on each birthday.

Your poem and her painting compliment each other so well. A beautiful and unique interpretation of Rei's painting

    Good luck in the contest
