Magpie Spring *

Magpie arrives in our backyard this spring,
interloper, trickster, reclaimer
to old scavaging grounds long adandoned,
he returns in tuxedo with long slender tail
barking for the dog food we leave out for crow.
he returns on currents of pitospporum ceonothus and orange blossom.
a piano of color,
things exude their scent,
as if to say
breaking open is required... to bloom in this lifetime.
do not stay locked inside,
return to your original lands like a magpie
scout it out,
as if to say whatever sweetness we breathe into
are broken open by--
does not linger for long.
as if to say
enjoy the feast
and share your kibble while you can,
to say
I am here I am here.
a cacophany
from the telephone lines
from the fog licked grass
from fence post to branch
from the precarious tips of the world:
we are here,
become perfume before you die,
spill
spill.

Author notes

In honor of Teddy, who passed away too soon, but
was a fountain that spilled affection and love.
I guess this might be a prewrite? since I did post it briefly a few weeks ago, but wanted to share it here with its kind.

that whole message not contained in any one or even five lines is so beautiful. I've read this several times and it comes together so slowly but surely and there's a small 'snick' at the end that makes it mine. most poems are someone trying to get a point across so... powerfully that they beat it to death, almost. this was a most gentle opening, releasing, offering of the revelation.

    kudos to you for this!

Everytime I read this I feel immense sadness.
It is a wonderful poem, full of content that opens doors to memories and wonderings...
