I just wanted to let you know:
I hate writing.
I hate the pen and the paper and the keyboard and the words.
I hate the soul-vomit that comes up without my knowledge or permission.
I hate that I see everything in terms of similes and metaphors;
it’s obscene.
I hate those other people,
the ones who call themselves writers
but really just shit all over the page and
congratulate each other on the varying color and smell and texture of their shit;
but it’s all just shit, Hank.
I hate rough drafts and
I hate revisions and
I hate being applauded more than
I hate being hated.
Bottom line:
I hate writing and I never want to write again.
He’d pause then, taking a drag from his cigarette
or a drink from his beer, before replying:
--You and me both, kid.
You and me both.
We’d both sit there for a minute,
exhaling smoke,
sipping on alcohol, letting it sit on our tongues,
mulling it over with our thoughts.
Then,
--Thanks, Hank.
We’d both hang up and go our separate ways.
I have his number.
If I could call him, I would.
But I don’t think he gets very good reception
anymore.

Brilliant! I love the format of this, and the simplicity of the conversation, but it still leaves a great impact. You did a great job putting down your thoughts in a coherent, yet still believable way. Great write!
