Prom Night.

Excitement fills the air,
for it's the prom tonight,
they've picked out their dresses,
one is yellow the other white.

As they descend the staircase,
the family gathers round,
smiling with pride and wonder,
will their girls be crowned?

The camera freezes images,
of their beautiful smiles,
picture after picture taken,
to add to the photo files.

A knock anounces Angie's date,
he stares at her with wonder,
handing her a pink corsage,
his heart clapping like thunder.

Aubrey's escort has arrived,
he gently pins on her flower,
and the girls are led to the car,
as the clock it chimes the hour.

The school gym is a wonderland,
strung with tiny fairy lights,
against the blue of the marquee,
they look like the starlit night.

The girls are greeted by friends,
and then led to the floor to dance,
everything seems dreamy and magical,
the air thickens with romance.

Soon the gym is daedly quiet,
the vote for queen and king,
the girls whisper to each other,
" I really hope you win".

The d.j clears his throat,
he's watched by every eye,
as he announces "It's a draw",
there's a huge gasp of surprise.

The girls step up onto the stage,
with their handsome  dates in tow,
and as they all recieve their crowns,
applause sounds out from all below.

All too soon the night is over,
but the memories are always there,
for those two lovely sisters,
and the family that they share.

Lovely! My daughter had her prom last week so I can identify with this. A great occasion, but not without its traumas. This is an excellent write.

Reading this was like watching one of those great teen american movies on a sunday afternoon, with a big bag of sweets and a cup of tea! it is nice to read something so happy and uplifting! i always thought it was a shame we dont have proms over here, they sound like a lot of fun, and this poem captured the magic as i imagine it to be, perfectly!

Hey gal, I was just inspired by the picture We don't have proms in England, so they always seem elusive and magical to me. I'm sorry your night was not just like this but hope it was something pretty special anyway. You do both look beautiful by the way.K
