5 Piggies

5 piggies rooting in the corn
quick daddy  come blow your horn
chase the piggies back to the pen
one went in, while the others go again.

4 piggies rooting in the roses
look at their faces, dirty little noses
chase the piggies back to the pen
one went in, while the others go again.

3 piggies rooting in potatoes
eating leaves and smashing tomatoes
chase the piggies back to the pen
one went in, while the others go again.

2 piggies rooting in the flowers
lots of  fun for hours and hours
chase the piggies back to the pen
one went in, while the last went again.

1 lone piggy rooting in the trash
licking up the last of the corned beef hash
chase the piggy back to the pen
he went in, while the others left again!

Author notes

For about 3 years my dad raised pigs. They would get out at least once a month and root up my mom's garden and flower beds.

Watching the little piglets, with their curly tails running as fast as they can, hopping in circles and scooting around is so entertaining!

Of course my mom didn't appreciate the entertainment!

It's very cute!! I like how it resembles a nursery-rhyme.

I love the imagery, it made me giggle when I was reading it. It made me think of when I was littler and my family had a pig farm.

      Thanks for the comments.

I don't think there is anything cuter than little piglets. (farm animals that is)

This is a delightful children's poem and it wouldn't surprise me to find it somewhere in print one day. I can imagine many a child sat on their parent's knees being read this lovely little tale. I think it makes it all the more wonderful for being based on personal memories.

I called my mom to tell her I had written a poem about dad's pigs, she still remembers those pigs rooting in her garden every year.

      Glad you enjoyed the poem.

this is delightful! I loved reading it, and it reminded me of using toes.. like 'this little piggy went to market'... this would be great fun to do with toddlers! I can just see glee in their eyes when starting to recite, "5 little piggies rooting in the corn"
