Some would tell you to be a saint
one must be canonized and go through
certain steps to prove their worthiness.
But I can tell you I've known a saint
kissed a saint and loved a saint
and I feel confident she rests in heaven.
Her life was spent in meager surroundings
however quite intelligent, life kept her
from pursuing a higher education.
Although others might have held
grudges or been filled with jealousy
she lived her life filled with love for all.
She'd drive for miles on country roads
to pick up grocery lists and "to do" lists
for her aging neighbors.
She'd give free 'perms' to the aged farm wife
who'd never get
to enjoy a beauty parlor.
She would hoe gardens for the woman
who suffered from arthritis
and couldn't begin to garden herself.
Then come back at summers end
and can the tomatoes
and freeze the corn, she'd make a day of it.
Wall papering, painting, weeding flower beds
are just a few things she'd do for her country
neighbors who could not do for themselves.
She knew way back then
the dignity aged ones needed and gave the help
they had to have to live on their own.
While her life was spent caring
for others she spent little
time taking care of herself.
A ruptured appendix removed
any hope of having children or grandchildren
but her nieces and nephews filled the void.
Laughter and love
filled every room of her
old farm house.
She died one day quite unexpectedly
I guess we thought she'd live forever
the funeral home was filled to overflowing.
Her farm house was sold, bulldozed over,
nothing remains of her life
but the memories I carry in my heart forever.

Amazing
Yes she was a saint even if some churches don't recognize her as such. It is simple acts of kindness that mean the most. I love the poem and it is so touching. God bless you, Mark ....congrats on the trophy!

She truly inspired me to do for others without complaining or expecting favors in return.
And to this day I think of her often.

I really like this entry... it's filled with emotion and love... the respect you show this woman really shows through in your words...
I think what I like most about this is that you show that we each can make a difference in the world around us just by giving a little of ourselves! You've taken a normal, everyday person... and shown what an impact that one can have...
This is well written... you've gotten your message out in clear tones and it's easily read. A fine contest entry!
