Mother & Another

The person who listened
Was not the one who listened
To her crying all night
As a baby

The person who really cared
Was not the one who cared
For her lying tiny and helpless in the cradle
As a baby

The person who really understood
Was not the one who understood
When she was hungry or sleepy
As a baby

The person who really knew her
Was not the one who knew her
The very first time she beheld the world
As a baby

The person who hugged and kissed her tears away
Was not the one who
Rocked her to sleep
As a baby

The person who really looked into her
Was not the one who looked into her
When she played around joyfully
As a toddler

The person who revealed to her the world
Was not the one who
Taught her what the moon is
As a kid

The person who held her hand
Was not the one
Who clasped her hands in a firm grip
As she fumbled to walk

The person who corrected her
Was not the one
Who shouted at her for innocently
Kissing the candle flame

The person who spent hours with her
Was not the one
Who spent hours watching her
The first steady steps

The person who made her feel important
Was not the one
Who boasted about her beauty
To friends and relatives

The person who was anxious 'bout her
Was not the one
Who eagerly waited for her
Baby's fever to recede

The person who was concerned
Was not the one
Who sat up the whole night
By her child's sickbed

The person who shared everything with her
Was not the one
Who shared happiness with her
In bearing her

She belonged not where she ought to have
She belonged elsewhere.......

    Now I see!

The mother theme.... this is elliptical, full of concrete images and memories, but also the confusion of having a mother and needing something else, finding completion and satisfaction not in the mothering but in the "othering"... poignant and moving.
