In the red sunset he stood
staring at the canvas,
a painting he had not seen for decades
which he promised he would not see again.
But there he stood and stared,
he bit hard on the end of his meerschaum pipe
and glared at the sign “pas de fumer!”
And he could overhear excited voices en francais’
italiano, English… 'there he is" … before his own painting!
In the red sunset he stood, and his mind was made to travel
back in time over the days spent making this piece of art.
He remembered the woman of his life.
She who brought his art to the skin of his body,
to air and sunlight;
where it would wash over the world in beauty, she did this.
The afternoon he spent slaving at his easel
when she came in the room
and looked at his painted hands and face;
she put both hands on his face and kissed him.
She made love to him with a passion and fire
that still made him tremble;
how her hands reached out to the walls
and left painted handprints on the canvas,
How like beads of perspiration she kissed from his face
gone.
They laughed at the artwork of their passion. Masterpiece!
And how she said, “this is goodbye”.
In the red sunset he stood
staring at the canvas,
a painting he had not seen for decades,
which he promised his heart he would not see again.

This is wonderfully written and full of emotion. I really enjoyed reading it. You have told such a sad story.

This just made to the top favourites in my list of PK's poems. The passion and hurt painting. Such a sad thought to have a canvas made of prints of love remembering a goodbye.
An excellent mix of poetry and prose you have here, and the painful feeling comes intensely through your words.
Thanks

A beautiful poem although it's not only love. I bet she came back in the picture I am a painter and stories of passion around canvas never last for one time.. talking about experience especially when you build it on the canvas and use your own emotional sweat. Nice painting. Red is the color of passion which lasts usually. Where there is a bit of hope the armor of despair is stronger than the best canvas. So i won't tell you all my stories but can tell you that painters never put away a painting to hide away for ever. Reminds me of David for some reason. My husband is impatient to see me pronto. We are just fine but i have to go here. Ciao ciao.

Sometimes the best momories are the ones we bury deep inside. We take photo's or other images that bring that moment back to life for us. Touching at times, painful in other way's love that couldn't last. Good luck in your contest. ~Sie

Passionate!
Red is the color of love and passion.
This poem beautifully illustrates this image.
I could see the two lovers enjoying each others
company in the splendour of true romance.
Your words were powerful and real to life.
You painted an awesome picture! Bravo!

Great
This was so beautiful. My favorite part was:
And how she said, “this is goodbye”.
In the red sunset he stood
staring at the canvas,
a painting he had not seen for decades,
which he promised his heart he would not see again.
That part touched me and was so amazing. Great job and best of luck inyuor writing future. -

Being an artist..I often get more paint everywhere else than on the canvas..lol..
I loved this, sad, but also a very evocative essence about it.
Lovely, and so appropriate.

Eloquence in artistry; a grand entry worthy of serious consideration. Good luck in Carol's contest.
