Friends

I dream at night of friends, both far and near,
I dream of friends now cold within their graves.
I pray at night they know joy but no fear,
I pray they find the courage to be brave.
Within my heart friends hold a special place,
so few are there now a part of my soul.
I close my eyes , I can see every face,
each one , for me, fills a different role.
No words can I write to express my heart,
no words to say exactly what I feel.
I wouldn't even know where I should start
even those I've not met, to me are real.
Friends, to me, are like my own flesh and kin,
I wear their friendship as a second skin.

Author notes

I wrote this today while chatting with a good friend form AP who is going through a rough patch right now...you know who you are

I don't know if my sonnets are getting any better but I thought I would give it a go

Since when did "graves" and "brave" rhyme?

    Great Poem

Great poem all round. I really liked how you incooperated all of your friends from allpoetry and anywhere else into this poem and made them apar tof you. This is just a very beautiful classical example of what some people mean to others even though they live far apart. Nice job and best of luck to yas

You did a wonderful job with this sonnet. It grabbed me from the first stanza. At first you had your trademark 'peace' in the author's notes and I regret that it caught my eye as I intended this to be judged completely unaware of the writer's identity. I enjoyed the flow and message here. You have my applause.

Wonderful sentiments Terry, you little Canadian charmer you. Friends are precious and you're right about different friends being with us for different reasons.
Lovely and I hope the person this was intended for is over the worst of their bad patch.

I like this examination of what friends mean to the writer. "A second skin" is a lovely metaphor - that close and sensitive, yet a barrier to a harsher world. Sweet thoughts from a sweet person. Best of luck!

absolutely beautiful . and a wonderful dedication to your friends.

I hope you dont mind me responding with the lil post below.

A friend is a person to believe in,
a person you know you can trust
a friend will be at your side always,
a friend is ever loyal and just.
holding your hand through your troubles
a firm rock as you battle lifes storm
to be there whenever they're needed,
with a heart ever loving and warm.
they smile with you when you're happy,
hold you close when they know you are blue
so if you are a friend to somebody,
then they too will be a friend to you.

    my friend.

    Ann

Very nice indeed. Frienships, and I mean real ones, are meant to be cherished.
The only suggestion I have is this, if you broke it up into verses it would probably read more smoothly. Great write regardless of my opinion

Some friends seem to be more like family and they share ones ups and downs. Secrets are kept and the support is there. Other friends one would not tell anything to for fear they would tell others immediately. Liked the sentiments in these lines and the flow, rhythm and rhyme in the lines. Well done.

this is very sweet, I hate to say this, and it may be just because I havent had any sleep, but the flow seemed a little...how do I put this, blocky, or robotic, I dont in anyway think that this poem is bad far from it, I think that it is very heart felt and sweet, I just thought that maybe the flow was a bit off.
anyhoo other then that great write, keep up the good work.
all my best wishes to you

It makes me feel somewhat meloncholy reading this. This is a beautiful poem and so, so sweet. Friends are so important and you did a great job of making this come across. You have good rhyme and good flow. I think you have done very well with the sonnet form. I really have nothing about it to critque! Very nice!

"Friends, to me, are like my own flesh and kin,

This is really really touchy and the last two lines....they are just superb....I can relate it with my feelings for my closest friends. Thanks for sharing.
